Santos Mahogany

General Description:

Santos Mahogany is a rich, dark mahogany-colored wood that is is extremely dense and stable. Its superior hardness and color fastness make it an excellent choice over other mahoganies, which are fairly soft. Boards can vary greatly in grain and color. The grain is commonly interlocked. Quartersawn material usually exhibits a striped figure.

Color:

Santos Mahogany exhibits a medium range of color variation—between a light orangey/brown with yellowish overtones to a dark reddish/purplish brown. Most of the wood exhibits a medium to dark orange/brown mahogany tone.

Color Change:

Santos Mahogany undergoes a slight degree of color change with a slight muting of the color range over time.

Grain:

Straight, smooth, elegant. Occasional curly grain or wavy figure in some boards, similar to maple.

Characteristics:

Santos Mahogany's unique grain variation, color and hardness make it one of the most popular exotic species. It is durable and provides great wear-resistance.

Finishing:

It is good with sanding, but may be difficult to stain.
