Receiving and Storing your Wood Countertop
It is important to uncrate your top immediately upon receipt. If the top is not going to be installed right away, it must be properly stored to enable air flow and allow the finish to complete the curing process.
Receiving your wood countertop
Your wood countertop will be delivered via Fed-Ex. Depending on the size of the top, it may be delivered via Fed-Ex Ground or Fed-Ex Freight. Upon receipt, check to ensure that the package or crate is in good condition. Please note any and all damage to the crate directly on the delivery notes.
Remove the entire countertop from the crate and store it horizontally on a supported surface in a climate-controlled room. If the top is not being installed at this time, please follow the storage directions below.
Uncrate your custom wood countertop
You MUST uncrate your custom wood top within 48 hours of receiving the crate.
You will need a no. 2 square head screwdriver to open the crate.
Concealed Damage:
If, upon opening the crate, you discover damage to any part of the custom wood top, you must report the damage to both FedEx and to DeVos Custom Woodworking immediately. Failure to report damage within 48 hours will relinquish your right to make a claim for any damage that may have occurred during shipping. We do not use second-rate or discount freight companies. FedEx Freight is reliable and concientious in their shipping. Damage is rare, but it does occur on occasion. Reporting a claim immediately will help to ensure that the problem will be resolved quickly and as painlessly as possible.
Tung Oil/Citrus Finish - Special Instructions
A Tung-Oil/Citrus (TOC) Kit is shipped with every top that has this finish. These tops should be uncrated immediately upon receipt so it can be exposed to air. Apply another coat of TOC within 2 weeks of receiving the top. This will complete the "break-in" period, and after that you will not need to reapply this finish for 6 months to a year or more, depending on usage.
Storing your custom wood countertop
Remove the entire countertop from the crate and store it horizontally on a supported surface in a climate-controlled room. If the top is not being installed at this time, it should be stored horizontally on "stickers" in a climate-controlled room.
Stickers are boards (usually 1/2" to 1" thick by about 1-1/2" in width) that are laid horizontally to the countertop on a supported surface. The top is placed on top of the stickers to enable air to flow under the top while it is being stored. Stickers should be placed to support the ends and the middle of the top.
